The quotation by Goleman that opens this chapter warns us that self-absorption kills empathy. If we want to lead with dignity, it is important that we divide our attention between our world within and the world outside of us. Too much focus on our inner worlds takes us away from noticing and reacting to what is happening in the world around us. What we should consider adopting is what Ronald Heifetz calls the balcony perspective, that is, taking a bird’s-eye view of our behavior while in the midst of fast-paced interactions with others.
